Stories of the Games

  • Matt Stutzman, the American archer who shoots with his feet, won the men's compound open title to add Paralympic gold to the silver he won at London 2012.
  • Harvinder Singh became India's first Paralympic archery champion in the men's recurve open.
  • Sheetal Devi, then 17 and also an armless archer, won bronze with Rakesh Kumar in the mixed team compound open, a result she would follow with a world title in 2025.
  • Wu Chunyan retained China's grip on the women's recurve open, a run she extended at the 2025 World Para Archery Championships in Gwangju.

Why it matters

Para archery shares equipment, rules and in many cases coaches with Olympic archery, and Paris placed both on the same stage within a month of each other. The Games also launched or confirmed several athletes who dominated the following two seasons, which is why the results above remain a useful reference point for anyone following the sport.
