How the championships worked

World Archery's preview set out the format:

  • Divisions: compound, barebow, traditional bow and longbow. There is no Olympic recurve division at the 3D worlds.
  • Qualification: two days of 24 targets each, with two arrows at every target and all distances unmarked. The maximum score was 1056 points, 528 per day.
  • Eliminations: six marked targets per match in the early rounds and quarterfinals, and four targets in the semifinals and finals.
  • Schedule: qualification on 29 and 30 September, eliminations on 30 September and 1 October, individual finals on 2 October and team finals on 3 October.

Unmarked distances make range estimation part of the contest. Our longbow vs recurve comparison explains how the longbow and traditional classes differ.

Yankton's back-to-back world championships

Hosting the field and 3D worlds consecutively made Yankton the centre of non-target archery for two weeks. Speaking to local station KTIV, NFAA Foundation president Bruce Cull called it "a big thing for Yankton, it's a big thing for South Dakota and a big thing for the tri-state area." Wiener, a former youngest-ever world 3D champion, told KTIV: "It's all about archery and I like it really much here because it's a big archery facility."

What it means

France's result continues the strength of European nations in 3D archery, which we also saw in Italy's dominant 2024 championships at Mokrice. For archers starting out, 3D remains one of the most accessible competitive formats: life-size animal targets, natural terrain and divisions for traditional bows as well as compounds.
